How to Pick a Short Inseam for Your Lifts

Post image

Caption: Inseam is not a style choice. It decides where the hem sits at the bottom of a movement.

Most people pick a short by how it looks standing up, then train in it bent over a bar. Inseam is the number that decides what happens in between. Here is how the common lengths behave once the movement starts.

What the number measures

Inseam runs from the crotch seam to the hem along the inside of the leg. It is measured flat, and it is the only short measurement that predicts where the hem lands on your thigh. Two shorts with the same waist and different inseams are different garments to train in.

Five inches, and the deep squat

A short inseam keeps the hem well above the knee through a full squat, so nothing catches at the top of the thigh at depth. It also leaves the mid-thigh exposed, which matters on a bench and on any surface that grips skin. Choose it if depth work and full range are the point of your session.

Seven inches, the general answer

Seven sits just above the knee on most heights and clears a squat without riding up on a run. If you train mixed sessions, this is the length that asks the fewest questions. It is also the easiest to layer over a base layer, because the hem and the layer's leg opening sit far enough apart not to bunch.

Nine inches, and equipment

A longer hem reaches the knee, which is what you want above a knee sleeve so the two do not fight for the same inch of leg. It also stays calmer on a bike and under a cable. The trade is at depth: on a shorter leg, a nine-inch short can meet the top of the calf and gather there.

Height changes the answer

Inseam lands relative to your leg, not to a chart. The same nine inches that sits above the knee at six foot two touches the calf at five foot six. The reliable method is to measure a short you already train in comfortably, then compare that number to the listing rather than guessing from the photograph.

What the liner does to the decision

A lined short is designed to be worn on its own, and its inseam is the only length in play. An unlined short is worn over a base layer, so you are choosing two lengths that have to work together: a longer layer under a shorter short reads as intentional, the reverse bunches. Each listing states whether a short is lined, and About Us explains why the range is organized that way.
